5 Mental Hacks from Olympic Athletes

taken from the Huffington Post written by Carolyn Gregoire

(check out #2)

With the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics well underway, millions of spectators are marveling at the physical skill and talent of the athletes competing in the Games.

But behind these athletes" physical feats is an arguably even more impressive mental prowess cultivated through years of training the mind to tune out distractions, reduce stress and anxiety and build the focus and stamina they need to achieve optimal performance. In fact, it"s not a stretch to say that great athletes succeed because they know how to stay at the top of their game mentally.

The Case for Child Meditation

Although I don"t often get the opportunity, I really enjoy talking to children about mindfulness and meditation.  Meditation has been proven again and again to improve every facet of your life.  But it"s not just for adults.  Meditation and mindfulness practices in children have been becoming increasingly popular.  One of the reasons is the fact that many pro coaches admit to teaching meditation to their players.  But I think another reason is a need for spiritual awareness.  Somewhere along the way, we have lost touch with the fact that we are spiritual creatures.  However, just in case your cynicism is at an all-time high, there have been so many studies done to prove the effectiveness of meditation among children.  It has been proven to reduce stress and impulsiveness, improve academic, sports, AND behavior performances.  And the best part is, your child can use meditation for the rest of his or her life.

Why Athletes Should Meditate

written by Robert Piper -Huffington Post on 18, March 2014

How many times in a conversation about sports have you heard the phrase, "It"s all mental"? Well in one way or another, it"s true. A mind that is not under control is a mind that makes mistakes. Mistakes that could lose a game. ...

Truth in Teleportation

This article is taken from Collective Evolution

The concept of teleportation comes primarily from science fiction literature throughout human history, but things are changing. It’s 2014 and developments in quantum theory and general relativity physics have been successful in exploring the concept of teleportation for quite some time now.

Today, numerous teleportation breakthroughs have been made. One example is the work of Professor Rainer Blatt, at the University of Innsbruck. They were successfully able to perform teleportation on atoms for the first time, their work was published in the journal Nature.(1) They were able to transfer key properties of one particle to another without using any physical link. In this case, teleportation

The Placebo Effect

this article is taken from Harvard Health Publications

Rather than dismiss it, we should try to understand the placebo effect and harness it when we can.

For a long time, the placebo effect was held in low regard. If people responded to a suspect treatment, we said it was "just the placebo effect." The suggestion was that they had been fooled in some way, and their response was inauthentic.

But attitudes are shifting, even in conventional medical circles. Randomized trials, some of them led by researchers at the Harvard-wide Program in Placebo Studies and the Therapeutic Encounter, have deepened the understanding of the placebo effect and its various components. Researchers have also used brain scans and other technologies to show that there may be a physiological explanation for the placebo effect in many

Endurance Runners: Ailments and Treatments

I live on a small island. It seems like every weekend there is a running event for charity going on here.  I can"t even recall the last time I saw an event being advertised as "just" a 5K.  Not that I am complaining.  Quite the contrary.  I love to see the hoards of people running for something in which they believe.  I really admire endurance athletes.  I think endurance runners are some of the most physically fit people around.  Seeing masses of healthy people always makes me happy, because those people realize how important it is to take care of their bodies.  There is a shortage of healthful people in this world.  And although I would like to blame Monsanto (aka Obama"s Food Tzar) and all those evil-boxed-food companies, I can"t.

Our Minds Alter Water...wait...What?!

This was first published by Arjun Walia for Collective Evolution

Ten years ago, if you told somebody that human consciousness alone can have a direct effect on our physical world they would probably look at you like you’re crazy. Today, however, is a different story. Within the past few years mainstream science is catching on to the fact that yes, consciousness is correlated and can have a direct effect on what we call our physical material world.

Experiments over the past four decades have investigated whether human intention alone affects the properties of water.(1) This question has been of interest to alternative medicine research, because the human body is made up of approximately 70% water. Interest in this topic has been rekindled recently by multiple researchers suggesting that intentionally influenced water can be detected by examining ice

Remote Viewing Reality

This article was written by Arjun Walai for Collective Evolution

Remote viewing can be defined in multiple ways. It’s the ability of individuals to describe a remote geographical location up to several hundred thousand kilometres away (even more) from their physical location. Although the concept has been proven, it’s not clear to the mainstream scientific community how it’s achieved. It’s important to note that a lot of the research within these programs remains classified, and the majority of the information we do have today was previously classified(2) only to be approved for release years later. It makes you wonder, what information with regards to the remote viewing phenomenon remains classified?

5 (Mental) Keys to Peak Performance

The best of the best athletes can choke.  No matter what sport you play, how many miles you run, how many targets you break, at some point, you may choke.  It really does happen to the best of us.  The  main reason this happens is that you have left a gaping hole in your mental game.  Let me be completely honest, even if you work with a mental trainer and sharpen your mental acuity, failure is still an option.  Unfortunately, there is no pill you can take to make you perfect.  But what you can do to achieve peak performance is learn to use the power of your brain.  There are five (mental) keys to achieve peak performance from a mental training standpoint.  If you can understand and implement these five (mental) keys, you are well on your way to becoming a more successful athlete.

Global Consciousness Experiment

taken from Collective Evolution, written by Joe Martino

A Russian scientist has been studying the human energy field and is claiming that people can change the world simply by using their own energy. While this idea is not new, not too many have taken the time to scientifically go about proving such ideas -although the field of quantum physics has shed some powerful light on the topic over the years. Dr. Konstantin Korotkov, professor of physics at St. Petersburg State Technical University, states that when we think positive and negative thoughts, each have a different impact on our surrounding environment.

“We are developing the idea that our consciousness is part of the material world and that with our consciousness we can directly influence our world,” said Dr. Konstantin Korotkov.

Hypnotherapy and PTSD

Hypnotherapy, for most people is viewed as a hoodwinked way to make money.  It has been looked at unfavorably for years across many professions.  Time and time again, you will hear people tell you it does not work.  I say, the proof is right in front of you! Finally, it has emerged as a credible, evidence-based treatment option for sufferers of PTSD that is used not only in certain branches of the military, but widespread throughout stress-inducing careers.  PTSD, or Post-traumatic Stress Disorder, consists of a series of symptoms that arise from a traumatic event which occurs in one’s life. The symptoms of PTSD usually consist of:

Consciousness and the Material World

This article was written by Arjun Walai for Collective Evolution

Nikola Tesla said it best, “the day science begins to study non-physical phenomena, it will make more progress in one decade than in all the previous centuries of its existence. To understand the true nature of the universe, one must think it terms of energy, frequency and vibration.” Swami Vivekananda influenced Tesla’s work, an Indian Hindu monk and chief disciple of the 19th century saint Ramakrishna. Tesla was also influenced by other Vedic philosophies.

Science works best when in harmony with nature. If we put these two together, we can discover great technologies that can only come about when the consciousness of the planet is ready to embrace them, like free energy.

Christmas Bells are Ringing!

The Fernandina Beach News Leader interviews Dawn Grant on her nearly twentieth consecutive year of volunteering.

Joy to the Children is a nonprofit organization that has reached out across Nassau County Florida and brought Christmas to economically disadvantaged children.
FBNL: How long have you been volunteering with Joy to the Children?

Dawn Grant: Since it"s origination. myself and several others co-founded JOY 19 years ago in 1995.

FBNL: Why did you decide to become involved with Joy to the Children?

Dawn Grant: I was a Children"s Case Manager at Nassau County Mental Health Center (now Starting Point) when Mike Smith came to us looking to identify children which could use support. Mike Smith and several of his friends, who called themselves "The Orphans" because they were empty-nesters, widowed, or divorced, would celebrate the holidays together. In 1995 they decided that rather than spending money on each other at Christmas time, they would pool together their resources and help some children in need. I immediately joined the cause and was the person who identify the children who would be our guests at the party. We met regularly at our homes and started the adventure of becoming a non-profit 501c3. We wanted to offer a party specifically on Christmas Day to children who would wake up Christmas morning to a "normal" day, a day that would be like all the others due to their economic disadvantage. Local restaurants donated food for the party, and the children got to see Santa who brought them gifts of clothes and toys.

The Mental Skills of Successful Athletes

Interesting view on successful athletes:

This article is taken from the Ohio Center for Sports Psychology.  Written by Jack  J. Lesky, PHD

You don’t have to be a professional athlete or an Olympic champion to be a successful athlete. Nor do you have to have a room full of trophies, win a state championship, or make the front page of the sports section. Successful athletes that I’ve worked with include an eleven year-old figure skater who has not yet won a competition, a high school golfer with a zero handicap, a middle-aged runner whose goal is to complete her first marathon, a weight lifter who holds several world records, and an Olympic medalist.

Living the Virtues Series: Humility in Life

Humilty in Life
Do you associate humility as a strong virtue in your life experiences? How does it come out in your perceptions? When you experience humility in life, you recognize that on a certain level, what you really know isn"t all that much. Life is so full of lessons. I think this quote by George Arliss really sums it up skillfully: “Humility is the only true wisdom by which we prepare our minds for all the possible changes of life.” At a certain point in your life, if you want to reach a higher state of awareness, you will concede to humility because you understand the wisdom behind it"s lessons.

Clay Shooting: Game On?

Game On?

So Nationals is over.  You"ve given it your best.  You cleaned your guns and put everything away until the 2015 season, right?  If, for one second, you can look back and objectify your performance, what would you find?  Maybe you"re disappointed with your overall FITASC score.  Maybe you realized that you should"ve just stayed with one gun.  Or perhaps, somewhere along the stations, your mental game got side-swiped.  Did you doubt your break points? Were there expectations based on previous performance? A streak of misses and you wanted to throw in the towel? Maybe you"re doing really well, then, trying too hard when it all falls apart......sound familiar?

Living the Virtues Series: Humility with Others

Humility with Others
Humility, by definition, is a modest regard for oneself. It is, in essence, a condition of humbleness. Humility with others is seeing eye-to-eye on many levels. It is knowing that we are tied to each other, in genetic make-up and awareness. This clear perspective that we are all one, is a view that not many people give into. Humility with others is putting one"s desires aside and being unselfish. This virtue is so difficult to encapsulate because there is a notion of entitlement in today"s world. It is seen in children and adults. This momentum of “Well, I deserve it,” is killing humility. Why do you think you deserve it?

Living the Virtues Series: Humilty with Self

Humility with Self
At the conscious level of your mind there are thoughts. Some thoughts are fleeting, some turn into daydreams. Creating an awareness of those thought patterns can help you discern the things that you can change in your life to make it more positive and peaceful. Living the Virtues Series is a blog series that I started earlier this year. Each month, I take a look at a different virtue; how to implement it into your life. I absolutely believe you can attain positive results from using the daily affirmations. The thoughts that are repeated through your conscious mind stick to the subconscious therefore creating new neural pathways and patterns. Humility is the virtue that I have assigned for the month of November. This week, I am writing about humility as it applies to yourself.

Deja Vu and Alternate Dimensions

taken from The Mind Unleashed 19th of February, 2014

Deja vu is one of the little-known and mysterious phenomena of our psyche. Many people sometimes feel that a situation in their life has already been experienced before in all the details. But how and when? This phenomenon is called déjà vu, which in French means ‘already seen’. It is a condition in which a person feels that once he already experienced a situation of the present, but the feeling is not associated with a specific moment of the past, but refers to the past in general.

Living the Virtues Series: Honesty With Others

Honesty With Others
This week, I continue to blog on the virtue of honesty. Honesty with others can be something that comes natural to you or something that you must consciously work on. In my professional experience, at times it is easy to tell when someone is being dishonest. But there are people I have met in my life who seemingly create this alter-reality out of lies. Honesty, goes beyond lying. It is absolute acceptance of truth, in thoughts, words, and actions. The quote I chose today really makes you think about the kind of person you are towards others. It states: “Some people will not tolerate such emotional honesty in communication. They would rather defend their dishonesty on the grounds that it might hurt others. Therefore, having rationalized their phoniness into nobility, they settle for superficial relationships.” ~Author Unknown

Success- Achieve Peak Life and Sports Performance

Success in Life and Sports
I love to help people achieve peak performance, and have really done a lot of it in my years as a hypnotherapist. As I have worked with many professional and elite athletes over the years, I have identified some of the best possible ways to make that happen. These tools are applicable to success in your life and in whatever sport you play. One of the ways to start on the path toward achieving peak performance, is by recognizing the success you already have.  As you look at your past successes, you need to recognize that they come from three main areas in your life: clarity, balance and energy. Everyone has the ability to identify successes achieved, but we also are given tools that help us be clear, balanced and energetic so that we do achieve success. Thinking about this may seem trivial or silly, but it truly does work in helping you achieve peak performance.

Mind Over Chatter: Check Your Thoughts

 Less Stress, Greater Joy
Want an advantage in life? There is a mental concept that exists and affects your life. In every aspect of your day, your mind goes through millions of thoughts. The quote that I chose today is befitting to this month"s theme of Less Stress, Greater Joy because it has to do with our thoughts, our perceptions and things that are within and out of our control. Today"s quote is by John Homer Miller. It pertains to the positive or negative nature of your thoughts. Your mindset is one of your greatest liabilities, but has the potential to be your greatest asset. I am a huge advocate of how you think can determine your well being, in every facet, from mind to spirit and in between. A positive mindset can be your greatest asset.

The Self Assurance Test: Challanging Situations

Challenging Situations and Self Assurance
As you look for ways to improve your sport performance, I would like you to consider the following suggestion from my golf product: “I am assured in my ability and know I can accomplish a task even in challenging situations.” How often would you say that you speak to yourself or others like this? Is it common? Do you view yourself as assured in your ability? Do you know you can accomplish a task, even in challenging situations? I believe many of you out there would say yes to that, but many might not.
Through your life experiences and your unique personality, maybe you have been able to build a level of confidence and self assurance that you can face any situation or task and feel that you can handle it. But there are also many people out there who are not assured in their abilities. Those who waver when it comes to having confidence in accomplishing a task, and who crumble in challenging situations. If you are in the former category, how do you address that?

Honesty With Self
This month I will be blogging about the virtue of honesty. Honesty is known as the quality of being truthful. This week, I am focusing on honesty with self. The quote that I have chosen for this week"s virtue is by James Allen. It states: "The man who cannot endure to have his errors and shortcomings brought to the surface and made known, but tries to hide them, is unfit to walk the highway of truth."

Living the Virtues Series: Forgiveness as a Spiritual Principle

Forgiveness as a Spiritual Principle
The last installment of the virtue of forgiveness is all about applying it as a spiritual principle in your life. This past month, I have blogged about applying forgiveness into every aspect of your life, from yourself, others to your past and so on. Today is the final installment of forgiveness. The quote that I have picked out is by Reinhold Niebuhr and it states: “To forgive is the highest, most beautiful form of love. In return, you will receive untold peace and happiness.”  By now, if you have continually read and implemented my Living the Virtues Series, then you have a pretty good understanding of who you are. You know the perspectives and attitudes you have in life. There is a reason why implementing this series into your life is so important. I believe that each and every one of us can lead a virtuous life. This does not mean that everything will go smoothly or perfectly in your life. It does mean that you learn the value of acceptance, or forgiveness, or kindness, or honesty and have the choice to utilize these virtues in your life.

Less Stress, Greater Joy: Silence, Tolerance, Kindness

Would you like to live your life with less stress and greater joy? I certainly would. Over the years of being a hypnotherapist, I have seen how much of an impact stress has on people’s lives and I’ve experienced some really great light bulb moments along the way. I have collected lots of evidence from watching clients progress, along with those who did not. Throughout that process I have learned a great deal about stress, and have found that it is not what most of us have come to believe it is.
People spend a lot of time trying to change things outside of themselves, believing that holds the key to their happiness or joy. They may say things like: “If my husband or wife would only do this differently, then I’d be happy”, or; “If my boss would stop doing that, then I’d be happy”, or maybe; “If I had a particular kind of house or a certain amount of money in the bank, then I’d be happy.” As long as people hold those particular beliefs, when they don’t have those

Living the Virtues Series: Acceptance of a Higher Power

Acceptance of Higher Power

The past few weeks have been the start of my Living the Virtues Series. I wrote about acceptance of self, others, life, and now I will delve into acceptance of a higher power. At this point, you should be having a pretty good idea of how to implement the basic acceptance-type skills in your life; meaning that looking at others, life, self, and seeing it for what it is. There is a freedom that you get when you have acceptance. This week, I"m writing about the acceptance of a higher power. There are a lot of different beliefs out there. I am not trying to tell you to go out there and buy into one or the other. I am looking at an all-encompassing higher power spiritualism. If you look at the evolution of a spiritual self of a greater wisdom that is within you and around you that channels through you, then acceptance in general is a very positive spiritual evolving way to live your life.

Pineal Gland and Spirituality

This article was taken from THE MIND UNLEASHED posted on April 14, 2014

The  pine cone shaped, pea-sized pineal gland, located in the center of the human brain, is an organ of tremendous interest these days. To many spiritual seekers it is the ‘seat of the soul‘ and the ‘third eye,’ the anatomical part of the human body that acts as our spiritual antennae, connecting us to the non-physical, spiritual planes of existence. However, to many scientists and rigid materialist thinkers, it is strictly an endocrine gland responsible for the secretion of the hormone melatonin, a substance which, among other things, aids in the regulation of our circadian rhythms.

10 Amazing Examples of Mind Over Matter

Great article from The Mind Unleashed on 5 February, 2014 at 09:57

While we often think of our bodies and minds as two distinct entities, it turns out they are much more entwined than we might assume. Researchers are continually finding evidence that the brain has a distinct power to manipulate the body’s physiology. As these 10 examples show, the mind/body connection can work in our favor or detriment, depending on our knowledge of a situation and our ability to control our thoughts.

Book I Recommend: E Squared: Nine Do-It-Yourself Energy Experiments That Prove Your Thoughts Create Your Reality

A fabulous down-to-earth explanation to help us understand that, not only, is there an incredibly powerful power that exists; but that we can tap into it. And, tap into it as confidently as when we plug into a wall outlet and expect there to be power available. Pam Grout even lays it on the line that it doesn"t matter what religion you are, or if you are even religious at all, that it doesn"t matter what you call the "power" as it exists either way. And she"s prepared to prove it to you in nine do-it-yourself experiments. Good stuff!

Amrit Yoga Recommendation

Yoga serves many purposes which tie in very nicely to my mental training teachings.

There is no question that yoga helps a person to build strength, and flexibility. It is common to see a person that practices yoga regularly as having a long, lean, toned body.

When I first learned of yoga, I remember thinking "Well, some of those positions don"t look much different than the floor exercises and stretches I had learned in gym class."

I have come to learn that nothing could be further from the truth.

2014 US Open Sporting Clay Championship

Wendell Cherry, John Woolley, Gebben Miles...Do any of these names ring a bell?  If not, you are probably not familiar with the world of clay shooting.  If you recognized one or more of these names, then you are aware of how easy these competitors make shooting look! The art of shooting clay targets has been around for ages, but it hasn"t always been looked at through the same pair of sport- lenses, like golf or football.  Although it"s "Greats" don"t have preeminent public reputations the way that Peyton Manning or David Beckham do, their abilities are just as noteworthy.  These competitors travel throughout the globe, with guns in tow, as they break more than just records and win tournament after tournament.

The Truth About Lies

May"s Theme is Breaking Bad Habits

I am pretty sure that all of us, at one time or another have told a white lie, whether it was out of fear, feelings, to gain respect, or simply saving face.  Our brains flipped a switch and the lie came forth on our tongues.  Some people even think they are doing the right thing because, in their head, they are saving someone embarrassment, hurt, or inevitable consequences.

US Open Sporting Clays Championship

Did you know that Clay Shooting has been around since the early 1900s?  We have the crafty Brits to thank for this game that has been described as "golf with a shotgun."  In fact, England held the first ever British Open.  Since the early 1900s, Sporting Clays has had a whirlwind of re ...

Toxicity of Cigarettes

May"s Theme is Breaking Bad Habits

Gone are the days of most things pure.  America"s food industries pre-package everything.  Few of us are savvy enough to figure out that box food is bad, and detrimental to our health.  Well, the tobacco industry is no different.  Gone are the days of dried tobacco leaves rolled up in some paper.  Did you know that there are over 600 ingredients that go into a cigarette?  It"s true.  And while I am shocked at that number, I am even more surprised that burning a cigarette causes chemical reactions so that over 7,000 chemicals are released into the atmosphere.  For us.  To breath.  Did you just consciously hold your breath?

Do you see the opportunity to play golf as a chance to learn more about your abilities, improve your skills and enjoy the sport? How about other areas of your life? Do you look at meeting new people as growth opportunities to learn something new or make new friends? What thoughts come to your mind as you think about answers to these questions? Do you realize that mental skills come into play whether you step out to golf for the 100th time, or meet new people for the first time?

Perfect Putt – Trust Yourself: Mental Golf Moment

April"s Theme is Peak Sports Performance

How would you like to make perfect putts each time you play golf? If you answered yes to that question, then you need to know if you trust yourself to make them. How do you know whether or not you truly trust yourself? Take a look at your mindsets and the way you perceive situations, yourself, others and your golf game. How well do you putt? Your perceptions or mindsets affect your performance in your golf game (or whatever sport you’re involved in), and also in regular activities of your daily life.

Improve Golf Performance: Believe, Recognize, Apply

April"s Theme is Peak Sports Performance

Although I often focus on helping golfers improve their performance, I also help sporting clay shooters, athletes and non-athletes as they implement my suggestions and mental training in their lives. You may notice your performance level in your sport, but you also have a performance level in everything else you do: work projects, relationships, time with yourself, work around the house, and things you do for others. In all aspects of your life, your performance can either be on par or off. You either live what you are capable of, or you experience lack or limitations due to ability; which incorporates your mental state at the time. You can’t ever separate your mental attitude, mental acuity, alertness, skills, pros versus cons, from anything you do. It is there and a part of every single moment of your life.

Hold Out Under Pressure: Golf Performance

April"s Theme is Peak Sports Performance

Golf is a serious mental game. I work with many of my clients to alleviate the many thoughts they have going through their minds as they ready themselves. I use suggestions during hypnosis to help them clear their minds and ultimately perform better. A suggestion I would like to expand upon here is one I pulled from my products. It is a hypnosis suggestion and also a self suggestion: “I hold out under pressure – mentally, emotionally and with each swing and stroke.” I chose this because the main times I see golfers under pressure are during tournaments or events, and they typically come to me for help with improving their performances for such events. Very little pressure exists when practicing or playing for the fun of it, but a lot of pressure exists when playing in competitions.
